This milepost is found on the south-east edge of Rode Heath. To the
north-west is Thurlwood Lock, the site of British Waterways' experiment
with a steel lock.
|
This area suffers from subsidence due to salt mining activities. One of the
locks at Thurlwood collapsed so British Waterways hit on the idea of building
a prefabricated steel tank lock with guillotine gates.
|
Unfortunately, the new lock took longer to fill than the original lock next to
it, and was more complicated to use. It was little used and eventually was
removed in the 1980's.
