This is an original milepost and stands overlooking the southern entrance to the
Harecastle Tunnel. At this end of the tunnel, both entrances retain their original
appearance.

The entrance to Telford's tunnel is on the left whilst Brindley's original tunnel
entrance can be seen to the right, just to the left of the building in the picture.
The water emerging from the tunnel is stained a vivid orange due to the levels of
iron in the rock through which the tunnel passes. It is something that no photograph
can do justice to, especially on a bright, sunny day.
