Milepost 57 ~ Etruria

Link to picture of milepost A replacement milepost located near to the site of Josiah Wedgewood's Etruria factory. This area was the site of the 1986 National Garden festival.
Link to view north Wedgewood's Etruria factory was located alongside the canal to the south of here. It was completed in 1768, but was demolished in the late 1970s and only one small building remains. Wedgewood's house has survived, however, and can be seen on the hill overlooking the canal.
Link to view south The factory also bordered the Newcastle to Leek turnpike. This is now the A53 and, where it crosses the canal, there is a turnpike milepost sunk into the verge. A lot of the turnpikes in the area used mileposts from Rangley & Dickson cast in the same style. This particular one states Leek 10 Newcastle 1½.
