This original milepost is situated alongside the top lock of the four-lock
Meaford flight.
|
The lower three locks of the flight were built in the 1830's to reduce congestion
caused by the original three-lock staircase located alongside what is now
Meaford Road lock (the lock below the Top Lock).
|
The towpath here has switched over to the eastern bank, and has been since the
turnaround bridge (just above Meaford House Lock). It returns to the western
bank courtesy of another turnaround bridge further upstream and alongside the
old site of Meaford power station.
