This milepost stands just a few hundred yards from the junction of the Trent
& Mersey canal and the Staffs & Worcs. The towpath is carried across the
mouth of the Staffs & Worcs by a fine and much photographed bridge.
|
The Staffs & Worcs was planned at the same time as the Trent & Mersey
(the Acts of Parliament were granted on the same day). It provided the link with
the River Severn at Stourport and was a major component in James Brindley's
'silver cross'.
|
As it stands alongside an access track from the towpath to the road, it is one of
the few posts that can be seen from behind.
