Milepost 30 ~ Armitage

Link to picture of milepost This is another replacement milepost. It is unusual in that it was sponsored by members of the Swarkestone Boat Club. Swarkestone is twenty-four miles back towards Shardlow.
Link to ... The milepost is located opposite the Armitage Shanks works, well-known as manufacturers of "bathroom ware".
Link to ... The housing of Handsacre has given way to industrial buildings. However, almost midway between this milepost and milepost 31 is the site of the Armitage tunnel. Although subsidence meant that it was reduced to a cutting with a modern road bridge, it was notable because it was the first canal tunnel to be built with a towpath.
