Milepost 13 ~ Monks Bridge, Egginton

Link to picture of milepost Although this is another isolated milepost, it is near to an important feature of the canal. Close by is a stone aqueduct built by James Brindley to carry the canal across the River Dove. Until recently, there was both a grassy towpath and a hedge across the aqueduct. When the hedge was in full leaf, it wasn't always apparent on the towpath side exactly where the the aqueduct began and ended. The stonework is substantial to support the weight of water, towpath and the puddle clay lining.
Link to view to aqueduct During the winter of 2002/3, the canal was closed to navigation whilst work was undertaken to renovate the aqueduct. the finished aqueduct is far more open than before. It now looks similar to another Brindley aqueduct at Rugeley (see milepost 34).
