Like mileposts 0, 1 and 3, this one differs from the rest of the originals in the shape of the
plate that carries the initials of the company that cast them. On this post, there is a square
plate bearing the initials R&D. Compare this with the shape of the plate on milepost 5.
At this point the canal runs along the side of Cliff Wood and overlooks the Trent valley. At one
time, there was a wharf here. Boats would travel up the river to the foot of the 'cliff' and
cargo would be transferred from canal to river. All that remains of the river at the foot of
the cliffs is the backwater known as Black Pool. There are signs of the existence of the wharf
for those who know where to look and what to look for, and there is a footbridge across the
canal (bridge number 10).
