A website dedicated to the mileposts along the Trent & Mersey canal
At the end of the 1990's, as part of a City & Guilds photography course, I did a piece of landscape work based on the canal around Shardlow. Following on from this came the idea to take a series of photographs that included each of the mileposts along the canal. From that idea came the pictures that are contained in this site. There are photographs of all of the 93 mileposts on the site plus the commemorative milepost at Derwent Mouth, the first milepost on the Caldon Canal and a section about the Anderton Boat Lift.
The site includes a couple of pages of background to the canal, its construction and the mileposts themselves. For anyone wishing to find out more, I have included a bibliography page and a series of links to some interesting canal-related material. For return visitors, there is an update page in the Picture Gallery section.
The canal hosted the Inland Waterways National Festival and Boat Show at the end of August 2004 on Shobnall Fields, Burton on Trent, and the 2005 show took place on the Bridgewater canal, which joins the northern end of the Trent & Mersey.
